KOHALA COAST, Hawaii: Big Island police have initiated a coroner’s inquest in connection with the death of a bicyclist in West Hawaii.
At 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Kona Patrol officers responded to a report of a male bicyclist down on the side of Queen Ka‘ahumanu Highway by the Kiholo scenic lookout, near the 82-mile area.
Witnesses tell police the bicyclist fell behind a group of other riders and was later found lying on the side of the highway unresponsive.
Police say preliminary findings show no sign that the bicycle was struck by any vehicles and the bicyclist showed no signs of serious injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle.
The 63-year old Kailua-Kona man was taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital, where he was officially pronounced dead at 10:40 a.m.
His identity is being withheld until his family is notified.
