HILO, Hawaii: Fire officials are reporting that a structure fire was reported at the University of Hawaii-Hilo’s New Gymnasium around 9 p.m. on Sunday night. Apparently, finding the culprit behind the smoke was a bit tricky.
From the fire department’s dispatch:
CO. 3 arrived on scene at University of Hawaii at Hilo athletic complex to find audible smoke alarm and light smoke showing from New Gymnasium, campus security on scene unable to locate origin of smoke. Investigation of surrounding buildings found smoldering fire in industrial gas dryer located in Physical Education Bld. #320. Fire extinguished with 10# dry chemical extinguisher and booster hose. No extension of fire noted beyond dryer, only minor smoke damage.
The fire caused an estimated $10,000 in damage, according to fire officials. They say a million dollars in UH assests were saved.
No injuries reported. The fire is under investigation.
