HILO, Hawaii: Hawaii Police detectives have charged 21-year-old Waylen Carenio of Hilo with manslaughter in connection with the death of a 44-year-old man following an altercation Saturday morning fronting a sports bar in Hilo.
The victim was identified as Roy Williams Jr. of Mountain View.
Carenio was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder on Monday, but after further investigation, he was charged with the reduced offense on Tuesday.
Police say that on Saturday, South Hilo patrol officers were flagged down by citizens just after 3 a.m. on Makaala Street. The officers discovered the unconscious Williams lying on the roadway. Witnesses said he had been in an altercation with another man, causing him to fall to the ground and strike his head on the pavement.
Williams was taken to Hilo Medical Center and later transferred to The Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu, where he succumbed to his injuries Sunday evening.
Carenio is being held at the Hilo police cellblock in lieu of $50,000 bail pending his initial court appearance scheduled for Wednesday.
