WAIKOLOA, Hawaii: It looks a little like a paniolo ghost town here at the Kamakoa Nui affordable housing project in Waikoloa.
These four model homes and one sales office sit at the entrance to the $40 million dollar development… and behind this roadblock lies a vast expanse of roadways that lead to nothing but empty lots. That’s because the project is currently mired in litigation.
UniDev, the former project developer, was sued by Hawaii County in 2009 for failing to complete the project. UniDev filed a counterclaim, and the matter was ordered to go to arbitration by the court.
Meanwhile, the county has issued a request for proposal in order to furnish these completed model homes.
