PUNA, Hawaii: A structure fire in a Puna subdivision blew off the garage roof when a Liquefied Petroleum Gas tank exploded, according to the Hawaii County Fire Department.
At 10:12 a.m. on Wednesday, fire crews responded to the blaze at a 2 story single family residence on Oceanview Parkway in the Blacksands Subdivision located between Pahoa and Kalapana. When they arrived, fire officials say they found the first floor of the structure – which was a woodframe and hollow tile building with a metal roof – fully involved involved. The fire spread to main living area on the upper floor.
A “large explosion upon arrival of first unit” was later found to be 100 gal LPG tank, according to a fire department release.
Fire officials say the blaze was under control in 30 minutes and extinguished by 3 p.m.
An adjacent residence received minor damage due to paint blistering. The structure was a total loss.
No one was hurt in the fire, and fire officials say they don’t know who the owner of the structure is, or who the occupant or occupants may be, according to a news dispatch. The cause is undetermined.
