Onomea, Hawaii– The search for 43 year old Ernesto Combes continued on Tuesday.
Combes went missing after he and three others were caught in a flash flood while fishing for prawns in Kawainui Stream off the Old Mamalahoa Highway in Onomea.
The Hawaii County fire department says that rough river conditions prevented a dive team from going into the water on Monday. However, officials said that on Tuesday, the conditions improved, and the dive team conducted their search.
The fire department detailed the search in a dispatch:
Co. 2 searched pond at last known point directly above 6-ton bridge with 3 SCUBA divers. At 0840 two ground teams of 4 personnel searched the two sides of the river approximately 300 yds. down stream of the bridge with negative findings. At 1050, dive team of 6 personnel was inserted by C-1 in a pond approximately 350 yds. down stream. 3 SCUBA divers searched the pond with negative findings. At 1330, 3 SCUBA divers continued from last known position down stream approximately 100 yds. Divers found 4 prawn spears that belonged to the missing party and his family. At 1640, two ground teams continued searching the banks searching further away from the river into the brush.
The search was suspended at 5:40 p.m.
