In celebration of Emergency Medical Services Week, the Hawaii Fire Department sponsored their 11th annual EMS Family Fun Run/Walk, Keiki Fun Run, and Health Fair on Sunday. The event took place at Liliuokalani Park, and the public was invited to participate.
This year’s proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society of East and West Hawaii and also help three Hawaii fire fighters battling cancer.
The 5K Family Fun Run and 2-Mile Walk began and ended at Liliuokalani Park in Hilo. A Keiki Fun Run, a non-competitive event for children ages 3 to 10, was also held at the same location.
EMS Week is celebrated nationwide and brings together local communities and medical personnel to publicize safety, and honor the dedication of those who provide the day-to-day lifesaving services of the medical “front line.”
Organizers say this year’s theme, “EMS—Everyday Heroes,” underscores the commitment and dedication of the 750,000 EMS personnel who provide an essential community service every day.
This year, the first male to finish the race was Jackson Halford, and the first female was Marianne Stone.
HMSA, Spencer Health and Fitness Center, KTA Super Stores, New West Broadcasting Group, and Clif Bar are major sponsors of the event
