Media release | superfreako productions
May 11, 2011 – Hilo Boys Chad Kukahiko and Denton Kukahiko are returning to Kona today with producer Kendall Kanoa Hawley for the Premiere of their short film, “carefully descending,” an official selection of the 6th Annual Big Island Film Festival.
“carefully descending”, an eerie love story about sanity and the barriers between lovers, was written and directed by Chad Kukahiko, a 1990 graduate from Kamehameha School and one of the first American cast members of the Off-Broadway hit STOMP. In the years since leaving STOMP, Chad has spearheaded several films and innovative storytelling projects, including lastdaysjournal.com, the world’s first social network for survivors of the zombie apocalypse as well as the upcoming experimental new media series, the time∞trip project – production on which just wrapped yesterday, May 10th. In 2007, Kendall and the Kukahiko brothers co-founded superfreako productions.
The score of “carefully descending” was composed by Benji Schneider of the new “it” band from Los Angeles, Lord Huron, and the stellar cast includes Olanna Taskey, Will Bowles and Lora Kojovic, who played Samuel L. Jackson’s wife in last year’s sleeper hit, Unthinkable.
To celebrate the West U.S. premiere of “carefully descending,” superfreako productions has launched their brand new web site blogfreako.com – the real-life story of superfreako productions told online as it unfolds. “carefully descending” will be shown in the very first screening of the festival, the first Free Family Screening at The Shops at Mauna Lani center stage on Wednesday evening May 11th starting at 7:30pm. Schedules, festival passes and individual tickets for other films in the festival can be found at BigIslandFilmFestival.com.
About superfreako productions:
superfreako productions is a Los Angeles-based production company with Hawaiian roots, formed with one simple goal: to tell great stories well, and do so efficiently, honestly and inexpensively. The company’s co-founders are Chad Kukahiko, Denny Kukahiko and Kendall Kanoa Hawley. “superfreako” is an irreverent play on the surname of two of the three founders, “Kukahiko” which means “to stand in the old ways”. This meaning and the Hawaiian ancestry of all three founders is something they hold sacred by trying to make the world a better place through stories created for all types of screens. Since forming in 2007, the three “superfreakos” have brought their various disciplines, interests and experiences together to form a generous and unique array of skills with which to tell their stories, and those of their clients, with competence, passion and economy.
