BIg Island Video News has obtained some moving video from Pohoiki – where last month, a very special memorial was held for the local Hawaiian legend, George “Boogie” Kalama.
This footage comes from Rosie Rosenthal, who was there the day that the community gathered to remember Kalama at the popular Puna makai beach park and surf spot – a few days after a different ceremony was held in his honor at Makaha Beach on Oahu.
On January 19, Kalama passed away of renal failure at Hilo Medical Center. He was 66.
Kalama, a Kea’au resident, was a musician, composer, entrepreneur, and member of the first crew of the Hokule’a voyaging canoe.
Kalama had deep connections to Pohoiki, as evidenced in this touching tribute.
