Voice of Stephanie Salazar
One of the biggest changes to the proposed $56 million bond project list is the removal of the Waiohinu Transfer Station, which would have cost $8.8 million, in favor of a $3 million Solid Waste Transfer and Recycling Station in Hawaiian Ocean View Estates.
6th district councilmember Brittany Smart lobied for the change some months ago.
Right now, the residents of the growing Ocean View community must travel 12 miles to dispose of their rubbish. The community has been engaged in a lengthy site selection process, an environmental impact statement has been completed, and the county is negotiating to acquire property for this project.
These amendments are likely to ensure the passage of the bill, which has already passed by the vote of the council but was reconsidered.
