Oregon’s Daniel Miernicki set a Waikoloa Kings’ Course record to take a four-stroke lead in the 21st Annual Amer Ari Invitataional.
The University of Oregon senior turned in a bogey-free round recording eight birdies and an eagle for a round which bested the previous course record by two strokes and tied the tournament record.
“There wasn’t a lot of wind,” said Miernicki. “I didn’t drive it well but my irons were great. I made a lot of putts early and then my finish was as good as I’ve played.
“The greens were a challenge with the grain of the Bermuda grass. We usually don’t play on that.”
Starting on the fourth hole, Miernicki was four under after the first 13 holes before firing closing out the round with three consecutive birdies, an eagle on the par-5 second and a birdie on the par-3 third.
“It’s just one round and we’ve got two more to go,” said Miernicki.
Tied in second place at 6-under-par 66 are San Jose State’s Matt Hovan and USC’s Jeffrey Kang and Sam Smith. There is a 4-way tie for fifth place at 5-under-par 67.
USC leads the tournament with a 17-under-par 271. Tied in second at 10-under-par are Georgia Tech and Oklahoma State followed by Arizona State (279), Oregon (281), Texas (282), Oregon State, Texas Tech and UC Davis (284), UCLA and Colorado (285), TCU and San Jose State (287), Washington (288), San Francisco, Hawaii Hilo and Florida State (290), Hawaii Manoa (292), Stanford (293) and Western Washington (294).
Leading the Vulcans is Nick Matsushima (T31, 71) followed by Neil Cabico (T42, 72)), Travis Russell (T65, 73), Blake Snyder (T76, 74) and Christian Agosto (T110, 79).
The second round begins tomorrow with a 7:30 a.m. start on the Kings’ Course.
NOTE: Miernicki’s 10-under 62 ties the tournament records of four other players when the tournament was held on either the Waikoloa Village Course or Mauna Lani Resort’s North Course.
