Route 190 in Kona was shutdown in both directions on Wednesday night, after a motorcycle crashed into a vehicle near Makalapua Road, killing the rider.
Fire officials say a motorcycle rider in “his late twenties to early thirties was thrown from his motorcycle down an embankment after first striking a vehicle and a guardrail. He was found unresponsive after a brief search. The driver of the vehicle was also injured.” Officials did not release any names.
“The motorcycle rider was pronounced dead at Kona Hospital after efforts to revive him were unsuccessful,” according to an official release. “The 33 year old driver of the vehicle that was struck by the motorcyclist suffered serious injuries and both victims were transported to Kona Hospital Emergency room by Medic 7 of the Kailua-Kona Fire Rescue Station. Highway 190 was closed between Kaloko drive and Hinalani St.”
Traffic was detoured to the Old Mamalahoa Highway while Hawaii County Police conducted an investigation of the incident. A Hawaii County Civil Defense message was issued advising the public to avoid tha area between Hina Lani Street and Kaiminani Street.
“Excessive speed” was cited as the cause of the incident, according to the Hawaii County Fire Department.
