A fisherman who fell while climbing down a rope at a North Kohala fishing spot on Saturday has died.
Police identified the man as 39-year old Rockne Ching of Kapaau. He was with two others when he tried to rappel down a 50-foot cliff at a fishing spot known as “Ladders”. Ching apparently lost his grip and fell about 20 feet onto the rocks below.
Ching was air lifted from the remote area by a Fire Department rescue helicopter and taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital. He was then transferred to Maui Memorial Hospital for treatment of head and back injuries.
On Sunday evening (November 21) Ching died from his injuries.
