If you were looking for true Hawaiian music and the meaning of ‘ohana, it was in Ka’u all week long. The 5th annual Kahumoku ‘Ohana Hawaiian Music and Lifestyles Workshop that concluded with a jam session on Saturday in Punaluu.
Five time Grammy award winner Keoki Kahumoku organizes the event held on the grounds of the Pahala Plantations Cottages – and includes workshops in music techniques of the past and present. This year’s roster of instructures was the largest ever, including his dad, George Kahumoku, Jr. his uncle Moses Kahumok, Ledward Kaapana, John and Hope Keawe, Sonny Lim, Diana Aki, Brittni Paiva , Jeff Peterson and more from around the island.
Students from Ka’u High school were among participants that hail from around the nation, and Japan. Keoki promotes his workshops as a rare opportunity to learn ki ho’alu – slack key guitar, ukulele, steel guitar, song writing , music theory and hula from today’s top master.
In addition to his music, Keoki is a chief cook –of Hawaiian food – another vital part of sharing Hawaii’s unique lifestyle with guests.
The Kahumoku ‘Ohana Hawaiian Music and Lifestyles workshop closes with a free public concert on Saturday, November 13, in Pahala.
