Much needed rain on the East Side also put a slight damper on various Hilo community events this weekend, ut as the rainiest ‘city’ in Hawaii, the hale and hearty brushed it off and enjoyed Downtown Hlo’s Black and White Night event on Saturday.
Folks dressed in black and white as they strolled Kamehameha, Kilauea and all of Hilo’s side streets, undaunted even though the event was nearly washed out.
The downpour continued into the next day, but it would take more than rain on the parade to turn around the honored veterans.
The parade’s Grand Marshall was Col. Edward Teixeira (ret.)
The U.S. Armed Forces color & honor guard joined Hawaii Governor elect Neil Abercrombie, Hilo’s State rep Jerry Chang (who was among the first continent riding motorcycles), Cliff Tsuji, Dwight Takamine and Mark Nakashima, who walked walked the soggy street with umbrellas, and Faye Hanohano who rode on a float.
The march also included local military and school bands, ROTC units, and of course, members of the 442nd Veterans Association, and disabled vets.
