The fourth annual Parade and Festival for the United Nations International Day of Peace was held in Honokaa this weekend.
After a march down Mamane Street, participants gathered at the Honokaa Sports Complex to celebrate the day with the rest of the world.
There was a special appearance by the Royal Court of Hawaii Island Festivals, and everyone in attendance was treated to a special hula performance by Honokaa students.
The renown Honokaa High School Jazz Band, led by Gary Washburn, had the crowd dancing.
The event is put together by the Honokaa Hongwanji Buddhist Temple’s Peace Committee. It is the brainchild of committee chairman and Honokaa high school teacher Miles Okumura.
Okumura received the 2010 Peace Committee Distinguished Peacemaker Award the following Tuesday, Sept. 21, at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
Organizers say Hawaii is the only state in the union to observe the United Nations Peace Day.
