The Hawaii County Council committees met in Hilo on Wednesday, September 8th.
Early in the day, the Finance Committee agreed to move ahead with the purchase of the “Lucile P. Kingman Trust Parcels”, located mauka of the popular Magic Sands Beach on Alii Drive in Kailua-Kona.
The area was next in line for possible acquisition, according to the Public Access, Open Space, and Natural Resources Preservation Fund priority list.
Two of the three parcels will be purchased with the Open Space funds. All three parcels are valued at over $4 million dollars.
There was some initial confusion over the “unfinished business” of a similar resolution seeking to build a fire station on one of the parcels. Open space funds cannot, by law, pay for such improvements.
However, South Kona councilwoman Brenda Ford cleared things up…
The land purchase which now moves on to the full council.
