For the second time that day, Councilman Kelly Greenwell withdraws a controversial proposal during Tuesday’s committee meetings.
A resolution urging the Hawaii County Police Chief to halt the use of unmarked police vehicles received no support from the rest of the Hawaii County Council Committee on Public Safety and Parks and Recreation. Greenwell choose to withdraw the resolution, much like he did his Sunshine Law resolution in the Finance Committee meeting.
The timing of the resolution drew heavy scrutiny. Greenwell was arrested on Queen Kaahumanu after an altercation with a county police officer, when the councilman was pulled over for speeding. Greenwell said the unmarked police car resolution was drawn up months ago, and had nothing to do with his high profile run-in with the law.
There were no representatives with the police present to comment on the resolution. Committee chair Dominic Yagong said the police would not be sending anyone to testify due to the probable litigation that may be forthcoming in regards to the Greenwell arrest.
