“Kanikapila, Kalapana Style” was the theme for the 3rd annual Kalapana Cultural Festival this weekend, held at Keokea Loop.
Hands on cultural demonstrations, ono food, and well known local performers headlined the event. It was also an opportunity for the Kalapana families who were scattered and displaced by the lava flows of the late 1980s to reunite.
The festivals began in 2008 with the “Kalapana Comeback Day”, put together by the Kalapana Community Association and its nonprofit Kalauonāoneopuna.
Organizers also said that donations were being accepted in order to raise the funds for a Kalapana cultural and community center nearby.
