And the big parade on the island this weekend was held in Kailua-Kona.
There were sixty-five entries in Kona’s Independence Day Parade, which was sponsored by the Rotary and Lions Clubs of Kona.
Numerous community groups and over a dozen military and veterans units marched down Alii Drive.
The Grand Marshal was Hawaii’s celebrated Senator Daniel K. Inouye. Inouye, a war hero of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team in World War II, has been a part of Hawaii’s Congressional Delegation since Hawaii became a state in 1959.
Other members of the 442nd – the most highly decorated regiment in the history of the United States Armed Forces – joined the Senator in the parade.
And as the political season looms ahead, there were plenty of candidates to be found in cue. After the parade, many of the state’s most prominent Democrats celebrated the holiday at a special Family Reunion and Picnic Hale Halawai immediately following the Parade.
