July 6, 2010 – Puuanahulu, Hawaii
A 500 acre brushfire on the west side of the Big Island has been contained, according to a fire department media release.
The wildland fire on the makai side of Hwy 190 at the 27 mile marker is within the boundaries of both man-made and natural fire breaks.
The fire department reports that there are hotspots still smoldering well within the burn area. Fire crews are patrolling Hwy 190 to keep the fire from jumping to the mauka side of the road. Fire crews plan to enter the area of containment later this morning to extinguish hotspots.
The cause of the fire is thus far unknown. Yesterday, the brushfire forced the closure of Highway 190 from Waikoloa Road to Kaiminani Drive for much of the day.
