POLICE UPDATE –
Fire Department personnel located human remains Friday (June 25) believed to be those of 41-year-old Joseph Pacheco Jr., who failed to return from picking opihi on Wednesday (June 23).
The remains were recovered at 8:30 a.m. Friday one mile north of Papai Bay. They have not been positively identified.
An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
ORIGINAL REPORT: Rescue personnel are continuing a search for a Hilo man who went missing off the east coast of the Big Island of Hawaii.
Police say 41 year old Joseph Pacheco Jr. left to pick opihi along the King’s Landing coast around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday (June 22) but failed to return home.
Fire Department found the man’s dog and backpack about one mile south of Shipman Estates Beach. The search for Pacheco was suspended at 9 p.m. Tuesday and resumed at first light Wednesday.
Hawaii News Now reported yesterday that officials on the Big Island had to pull divers out of the water during the search because two tiger sharks and a six-foot hammerhead shark were spotted in the area.
Police ask anyone who may see Pacheco to call the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. All Crime Stoppers calls are kept confidential.
