An amendment to the proposed county budget that would have raised revenue – and cut back property tax increases – by instituting a $1 charge to ride the Hele-On bus system was voted down at Monday’s Hawaii County Council meeting.
The plan to charge passengers was introduced by Dominic Yagong. Island residents have enjoyed a free ride courtesy the county Mass Transit Agency for years. The boarding charge was just one of many ideas the Hamakua councilman came up with to chip away at the $25 million in property tax increases that will result from the approval of the spending plan.
