May 1st means May Day in Hawaii, and a number of celebrations were held around the Big Island.
The Volcano Art Center hosted of its first annual “May Day is Lei Day” Festival.
The day kicked off with a sing-along of “May Day is Lei Day” lead by the Kani Le’a ma Kilauea ‘ukulele group.
The festival also featured a lei contest and silent auction, lei-making demonstrations, and hula.
The event is supported in part by a grant from the County of Hawaii Department of Research and Development and the Hawaii Tourism Authority.
