Stunt raises awareness for Special Olympics

Local law enforcement have been taking their service to a whole new level lately.
Starting on April 29th and ending today, the Hawaii County Police have been camping out on the roof of Safeway as a part of Special Olympics Hawaii’s ninth annual Cop on Top event.
Volunteer, off-duty police officers congratulated generous shoppers in an effort to raise funds for Special Olympic athletes. A press release for the event said that the cops “will eat, sleep and collect donations from the top of scaffolds to raise donations and awareness for Special Olympics.”
In this video, shot at the Hilo Safeway, the event was drawing interest and donations from a crowd of residents. Balloons were handed out to the keiki, and Miss Kona Coffee joined in to assist police.
Last year’s event reportedly raised more than $210,000 for Hawaii’s athletes.
