A brush fire burned grassland acreage on the Kona side of Waikoloa road near the 9.5 Mile Marker on Wednesday.
The situation forced the closure of Waikoloa Road between Waikoloa Village and the Highway 190 junction. Hawaii County Civil Defense reported that no structures were threatened at the time of their first message around 4 p.m.
Fire crews fought the large fire into the evening, using helicopters to drop water on the acres of flames.
This video was captured by Kona videographer David Schlesinger, who happened to have his camera with him when he was in the area at the time the fire broke out.
By 10:30 p.m. Civil Defense reported the road was re-opened. The brushfire was surrounded by fire breaks and fire crews are still monitoring the area.
