Two weeks ago, Big Island Video News reported on the new prioritized listing for possible open space acquisitions in Hawaii County. This week that list found its way before the County Council Committee for review.
Inevitably, some council-members wondered why their districts appeared shortchanged in terms of land priorities.
The entire purpose of the open space effort was even questioned, raising questions of eminent domain, and the status of places like Punalu`u Beach Park.
Councilmember Hoffmann, whose North Kohala district has the most targeted land listings of all other districts combined, also weighed-in on the issue.
In the meantime, the County has already announced that it has closed escrow on the purchase of a 151-acre oceanfront property in North Kohala known as Kaiholena North.
The property, being sold for about $6-and-a-half million, consists of three separate parcels, includes 3,000 feet of ocean frontage. The mauka borders of all three parcels front Akoni Pule Highway.
