Fallout from the state’s decision to reduce its workforce led to this strange scene outside the United Public Workers’ Hawaii Division Hall in Hilo… as union members picketed their own union!
Hawaii Community Correctional Center employees say their own labor union has failed to represent them in their time of need.
Several Hawaii Community Correctional Center employees are filling a Prohibited Practice Complaint with the Hawaii Labor Relations Board, over what they say has been unfair treatment by the state and their own union in the wake of Kulani prison closure.
Attorney Ted Hong held this press conference in November to explain the situation facing the corrections officers.

UPW Hawaii Division Director June Rabago told the West Hawaii today that she was disappointed by the action. “It’s just unfair that some of our members plan to picket based on misinformation and misapplication of the bargaining agreement,” she said.
