Dramatic action at the BIIF soccer finals from Kamehameha-Hawaii this past Saturday.
Four championships were decided, and all by no more than a single goal.
The Honokaa Dragons defeated the Christian Liberty Canefire in the Boys Division II championship, after this game winning header by Honokaa senior Sage Johnson in double overtime. The goal was the second made by Johnson in the 2-1 victory.
The HPA girls exacted revenge against Honokaa for last years Division II state tournament defeat, by beating the Dragons 1-0 en route to their BIIF title.
The Hilo Vikings took their second straight girls Division 1 title, defeating rival Waiakea 1-0 in a rematch from last year’s final.
And it was a thrilling double overtime battle between Kealakehe and Hilo for the Division I title.
After a scoreless first half, Hilo junior Chad Wissing gave the Vikings a 1 to nothing lead with this goal… and the Vikings nearly carried the score out to victory. However, in the frantic final seconds of regulation, the Kealakehe Waveriders managed to tie the game.
Marius Stensby scored the goal that extended Kealakehe’s perfect season into overtime… and he wasn’t done …
Marius’ second goal won the game and gave the Waveriders the BIIF title.
The win gives Kealakehe the No. 1 seed in the HHSAA Division I state tournament, scheduled for Feb. 10-13 at Oahu’s Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex.
