Members of the Camp Tarawa Detachment #1255 of the Marine Corps League spoke at the Pu’ukohola Heiau National Historic Site on Friday.
The league members retold the history of the Big Island’s role in World War II, when 55,000 marines who fought in the Iwo Jima Campaigns trained on the island.
The Marine Corps League also spoke about efforts to create a Camp Tarawa Educational Center on the Big Island, which they hope will be located somewhere in the Waimea or Waikoloa area.
