Keaukaha will soon have a new beach park, officially speaking.
Councilmember Dennis “Fresh” Onishi introduced an ordinance to designate a portion of Leleiwi Beach Park in Keaukaha as “Lalakea Pond Beach Park”. According to Bill 192, the area is “bounded by the direct extensions of Lokoaka Street and Kioea Street to the shoreline.”
Onishi and members of the community said that the designation was fitting, and has traditionally been called Lalakea Pond by the Keaukaha and Leleiwi Community, local fishermen, and long- time area residents.
The Hawaii County Council Committee on Public Safety and Parks and Recreation passed the ordinance with a positive recommendation to the full council.
