December 6, 2008 – Kailua-Kona, Hawaii
On Friday morning, Hawaii County Parks and Recreation and the Hawaii Fire Department Ocean Safety Division reported the closing of two beaches due to high surf conditions.
La`aloa Beach Park (in the video) and Kahalu`u Beach Park were both closed completely.
A high surf warning was in effect for west facing shores of the Big Island, as battering waves and powerful ripcurrents made swimming a dangerous gamble. However, surfers were not deterred from enjoying the conditions. Wave heights reached 8 to 12 feet in height.
On the edges of the beach park boundaries, large crowds gathered to watch the raging ocean.
