(BIVN) – The Hawai‘i County Salary Commission met in the Hilo Council Chambers on Monday to consider proposals for adjustments to future salaries of county executives and elected officials.
Commissioners were given a briefing by Finance Director Deanna Sako and Real Property Tax Administrator Lisa Miura concerning the financial impacts due to recent natural disasters on the budget and real property taxes for FY2018-2019.
A great deal of the discussion involved a request for input from Hawai‘i County Charter Commission Chair Douglass Shipman Adams, as to how the County Charter affects the Salary Commission’s role and operations, and any proposals commissioners may have to amend the Charter.
Salary Commissioners spent a lot of time voicing their displeasure over Bill 98, the Hawaiʻi County Council’s ballot initiative to make government salary adjustments more transparent through a charter amendment.
The election of a new Salary Commission Chair and Vice-Chair, effective January 1, was postponed.
