(BIVN) – The future of Hakalau Point was again debated before the Hawaii County Board of Appeals in Hilo on Friday.
The Hakalau Point Preservation Association is appealing the Hawaii County planning director’s approval of a Special Management Area Minor Permit that was applied for by the Shropshire Group LLC. Shropshire plans to develop a commercial/industrial venture in the area that would include things like a brewery, a restaurant, and a food manufacturing / processing facility. The preservation association wants to keep the location in open space.
Much of the first half of today’s hearing – which was a continuation of a proceeding that began months ago – involved heavy questioning of planning director Michael Yee by John Kaye. Kaye, as agent of the Hakalau Point Preservation Association, was trying to ascertain what Yee knew about the scope of the project when his department granted the Special Management Area Minor Permit.
The video above, recorded before the Board of Appeals took a lunch break, was indicative of today’s back and forth.
