(BIVN) – Senator Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) plans to bring the topic of the false emergency threat alert that Hawaii residents received Saturday to the national stage today.
Sen. Hirono plans to question Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen, who is appearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee for an oversight hearing. The hearing is touching on a number of important national topics.
The hearing follows Sen. Hirono’s conversations immediately following the alert with Hawaii Governor David Ige and Admiral Harry Harris.
“This weekend’s incident terrified Hawaii families and visitors, and I join them in demanding answers. We need to get to the bottom of what happened and make sure it never happens again. I will question Secretary Nielsen on what steps can be taken by the Department of Homeland Security, which includes the Federal Emergency Management Agency, to restore public confidence in the State of Hawaii’s ability to respond in the future,” said Senator Hirono.
We will update this page with highlights from the discussion following the conclusion of the hearing.
