PAHOA, Hawaii – A midnight fire burned a number of buildings in the heart of Pahoa Village.
Residents say the fire involved the Kava Bar as well as Luquin’s Restaurant and Akebono Theater.
Video taken by Daryl Lee shows the fire consuming the buildings on the mauka side of Pahoa Village Road as firefighters scrambled to contain the blaze.
There were residential units within the buildings. UPDATE (10 a.m.) The American Red Cross says the fire destroyed four apartment residences. “Big Island Red Cross volunteers went to the scene to meet with the affected residents and provided assistance with immediate emergency needs,” the organization reports. “The Red Cross also set-up a canteen for first responders and displaced residents. Caseworkers will continue to follow up with the family to ensure their immediate needs are met, and to provide referrals to assist with their disaster recovery.”
UPDATE (9 a.m.) – Hawaii County Police say Pahoa Govt. road is closed from Kaleo’s restaurant to the Community Center road (Kauhale) this morning.
