PAHALA, Hawaii – Mayor Billy Kenoi was on hand to welcome the community into the new Kaʻū District Gym and Shelter on Wednesday. The mayor gave some opening remarks before turning the microphone over to Bobby Gomes for a blessing, and later, local entertainer / executive assistant Augie T.
Kenoi was present four years ago when the project first broke ground.
The Kaʻū District Gym and Shelter is a 43,300 square foot structure with three basketball and volleyball courts, a kitchen, offices, locker rooms, storage and meeting spaces. The facility will provide a safe haven for Kaʻū residents in the case of a natural disaster or compromised air quality.
The project was funded by the State of Hawaii, constructed by the County of Hawaii, and will be cooperatively managed by the Department of Parks and Recreation for both school and public use.
