(Big Island Video News) HILO, Hawaii – Palikapu Dedman with the Pele Defense Fund addressed the Windward Planning Commission on Thursday (Jan. 8, 2015), demanding the commission release funds for a study on the possible adverse impacts upon Native Hawaiians associated with the development of geothermal energy generation facilities on the island. Dedman was arguing from a defensive position. Prior to his testimony, it was revealed a claims adjuster had recommended the commission deny the funding request. Dedman even lashed out at a planning commissioner for interrupting his testimony.
After hearing from Dedman and others, the planning commission voted to approve the release of $293,760 from the Geothermal Asset Fund to undertake the impact study. The commission also requested the planning department establish a Native Hawaiian Health Study Review Board that will provide advice in the conduct of the study.
Palikapu Dedman has a long, passionate history of opposition to geothermal development in Hawaii. The only facility currently operating in Hawaii is Puna Geothermal Venture in Pohoiki.
