OOKALA, Hawaii – A semi truck-tanker fire closed Highway 19 on the Hamakua Coast in the early morning hours on Thursday.
No one was hurt of injured. Fire crews report the cab of the semi was engulfed in flames when they arrived on the scene at 3:47 a.m. in Ookala. The driver was already out of the truck when the fire department arrived. The truck – owned by C and F Trucking – was pulling an 8,500 gallon tank with 8,300 gallons of diesel fuel still attached.
The fire department extinguished the burning cab and the diesel tank cooled. The truck’s cab was a total loss, but luckily the tank – full of fuel – was saved with minimal damage.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Both lanes of the highway were open before 7:45 a.m.
